The Best Graduation Gift for Your Daughter: A Custom Song (Plus 6 to Cue Up)
The gown is pressed, the tassel is on the right side, and you keep opening your music app looking for the song that says what you actually feel watching her cross that stage. You want something she can hear years from now and land right back in this week. A gift card doesn't do that. A song might.
Six songs that fit a daughter's graduation, and one made just for her
Start here, then keep reading for the one with her name in it.
1. "I Hope You Dance," Lee Ann Womack (2000). This is the parent-to-child send-off most people reach for first, and for good reason. Womack released it as the title track and lead single of her 2000 album, and it became her only number one on Billboard's country chart. It won the Country Music Association's Single of the Year and a Grammy for Best Country Song. It is a wish for a kid about to walk into the rest of her life, which is exactly what a graduation morning feels like.
2. "My Wish," Rascal Flatts (2006). Written by Jeffrey Steele and Steve Robson, "My Wish" arrived as a single off Me and My Gang in 2006 and went to number one on the country chart. It is plain-spoken where a lot of these songs get grand: a parent hoping their kid gets everything they are reaching for. Good for the walk to the car after the ceremony, when nobody is trying to make a speech.
3. "In My Daughter's Eyes," Martina McBride (2003). If the first two look forward, this one looks back and sideways at the same time. McBride recorded it for her 2003 album Martina, and James T. Slater wrote it. The song is about a mother seeing herself reflected in how her daughter looks at her. For a mom signing the card, it says the quiet part.
4. "The Climb," Miley Cyrus (2009). Jessi Alexander and Jon Mabe wrote "The Climb," and Cyrus released it in 2009 as the lead single from the Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack. It is a graduation-playlist regular because the message is simple and true: the hard part was the point. For a daughter who fought for the diploma, this is her song.
5. "Graduation (Friends Forever)," Vitamin C (2000). This is the literal one, and sometimes literal is right. Colleen Fitzpatrick (Vitamin C) and Josh Deutsch wrote it about how friends scatter after the ceremony, and it closes her 1999 debut album, built on a string arrangement that borrows from Pachelbel's Canon. If your daughter is leaving a group of friends she has had since kindergarten, play this one and watch the room.
6. "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," Green Day (1997). Billie Joe Armstrong wrote it years before it came out, and Green Day finally released it on Nimrod in 1997. It has been slideshow and last-dance music at graduations ever since, and in 2015 Rolling Stone put it on its list of the best graduation songs. An acoustic shrug that happens to mean everything. Fitting for a kid who would roll her eyes at anything sappier.
7. The one with her name in it: a custom song from Penned For You. Every song above is about a daughter. None of them are about your daughter. They don't have the nickname only your family uses, the summer she taught herself guitar, or the way she talked you both through the college decision. A custom song does. We take the details only you would know and write her a song about the girl who actually walked across that stage, so the gift that plays at her party is hers and no one else's.
A playlist borrows someone else's words. A custom song uses yours. You fill out a short form, about five minutes, with her name, the inside jokes, the thing she pulled off this year that still amazes you, and we write and record a song that is about her. Standard turnaround is 24 hours, and if the ceremony is tomorrow, 1-hour rush has you covered. It starts at $29.99, with 24-hour standard turnaround and 1-hour rush. Start your song and have it ready before she tosses the cap, or write their song as the surprise at the party.
If the ceremony is this weekend, give yourself the easy version: write down three things about her before you forget them, and we'll turn them into her song. Start here whenever you're ready.
