A Custom Christmas Poem for Your Daughter (Plus 6 Verses to Borrow)

You want to write something in your daughter's card this Christmas, and "Merry Christmas, love Mom and Dad" feels thin for how much you mean by it. Maybe she's small and still believes in the sleigh on the roof. Maybe she's grown and living somewhere else now, and the card is doing the work the hug can't. You're looking for a few lines that sound like you, not like a greeting-card rack.

Six short Christmas verses for your daughter

Christmas has a long habit of turning into verse. Clement Clarke Moore wrote "A Visit from St. Nicholas," the one that opens "'Twas the night before Christmas," for his own children, and it was first published anonymously in a Troy, New York newspaper in 1823. Christina Rossetti's "In the Bleak Midwinter" started as a poem too, written for a magazine in 1872 and only set to music decades later. You don't need to match either one. You need four lines that sound like a parent who knows this particular kid.

Here are six we wrote for this post. Copy one as is, or change a word so it fits her.

  1. For a young daughter, bedtime on Christmas Eve: Sleep tight, the house is quiet now, the stockings hang in a row. Tomorrow morning's yours to open, but tonight, just the glow.

  2. For a daughter who's your whole heart, kept simple: Of all the gifts beneath the tree, the brightest one is you. Merry Christmas, little one, from hearts that love you true.

  3. For a grown daughter living far away: The chair you sat in's empty, but the table saved your place. However many miles you've gone, you're never out of grace.

  4. For a daughter growing up too fast: You're taller than you were last year, your laugh is louder too. But Christmas morning, light still on, you're six, and nine, and new.

  5. A little playful, for the one who shakes every box: We saw you shake that package. We know you peeked. It's fine. The best thing in this house, though, is that you're a daughter of mine.

  6. Short and plain, for the front of any card: Merry Christmas, daughter. Of everything that's bright, you were the gift we wished for, and got, that first cold night.

Borrowed verses get you most of the way. Where they stop is the detail: the nickname only your family uses, the thing she does every Christmas morning, the inside joke that would mean nothing to anyone else. A custom poem is built around exactly that, so it reads like it could only have been written for her.

That's what we make at Penned For You. You fill out a short form, about five minutes, telling us who she is: her name, what she's like, the small things that make her your daughter and not anyone else's. We write her a poem from it. You pick the form, haiku, sonnet, free verse, or acrostic, and we handle the words. It's $14.99, with 24-hour standard turnaround and 1-hour rush if Christmas morning is closer than you'd like. Start your poem and we'll have it back to you in time to sign the card.

If you're reading this in December, don't leave it to Christmas Eve; even the 1-hour rush is easier on everyone with a little room. When you're ready, write her poem here.
